Energy Saving Tips
- Change all light bulbs to energy saving light bulbs. They last longer and use 20% of the power.
- Fit an insulating jacket to your hot water cylinder. Buy a British Standard jacket that’s at least 7.5cm thick.
- Insulate hot water pipes, especially the ones between the boiler and hot water cylinder.
- If your boiler is over 15 years old, it's a good idea to fit an energy efficient condensing boiler.
- Turn off all lights when not needed.
- Don’t leave the TV and other appliances on standby.
- Never leave hot taps running – its money down the drain.
- Turn your thermostat down by one degree.
- Don’t overfill your kettle; heat only the amount of water you need.
- Take regular short showers instead of baths – you’ll use 60% less water.
- Use your toaster, not the grill for toast.
- Wash your laundry @ 30°C.
- Install Renewable Energy measures.
- 10% heat is lost through draughty windows, draught proofing will help keep heat in.
- Nearly half of heat could be lost through uninsulated cavity walls, two thirds of it can be saved with cavity wall insulation.
- 26% heat is lost through the roof, loft insulation keeps the heat in and can save up to 20% on your fuel bills.
